Prologue
The story begins in Hakum Village, a village of Riders. You, along with your childhood friends Lilia and Cheval, set off into the forest.
Your goal is to look for monster eggs.
You happen upon a beautiful, bright egg in a nest. The three of you pretend to hold a Rite of Kinship, inspired by the ceremony in which Riders use a Kinship Stone to awaken deep bonds with monsters.
To your surprise, a Rathalos actually hatches from the egg!
Villagers are astonished that you hatched a monster without a Kinship Stone. But just at that moment, a disease called the Black Blight descends on the village.
The event damages the village and affects Cheval and Lilia deeply as well...
A year passes after the disaster. You receive a Kinship Stone from Chief Omna and become a Rider. Cheval leaves Hakum on his own mission, and Lilia, too, sets out on a journey that takes her away from the path of Riders.
You link up with reliable "pawtner" Navirou, and after overcoming trials and gaining experience as a Rider, decide to leave the village and see the world.
Your destination: the world of Hunters. You encounter a world different from your own.
Hunters make a living hunting monsters. Riders make a living fostering monsters. You live with Hunters, overcoming initial uncertainty, and work to build connections between Hunters and Riders.
Just at that point, the shadow of the Black Blight falls again over the world. People start to notice the serious effects it has on their lives and where they live. Things they took for granted are no longer the same.
And this starts to expand beyond a single village or town to encompass the entire world. Riders and Hunters are put to the test and forced to define their roles in the world.
